I haven't been out on many adventures lately (except for the 50 Sweaty Men adventure), so I thought I would blog about one of my favorite artists, Robin Foley. Among her many talents Robin Foley is an amazing soft sculpture artisan. She creates original one-of-a-kind sculptures that take between 400 to 1000 hours of hand sewing to complete.
Robin Foley started out making dolls and teddy bears for her daughter and soon expanded into more challenging animals, human forms and mythological creatures.
The sizes of her sculptures range from 16" to 24" tall. For the nudes and semi-nudes anatomical accuracy is achieved by sculpting one muscle at a time over a wire skeleton. She adds nylon skin and airbrushes realistic skin tones before applying a final translucent skin layer to create the look of living flesh.
She uses silks, velvets and brocades for clothing the figures. The hair is created by applying individual strands of mohair and the fingernails are made from acrylic resins.
Another soft sculpture designer who does incredible work is Lisa Lichtenfels. She has a studio in Springfield, Mass where she works on her amazingly realistic sculptures.
